Match Report – Spring Cup
20th March 2016
Kings Hill P1
Stonnall Phoenix 1:4 Wednesbury Sports Union
In a hard fought Spring Cup Group B match, Wednesbury showed their superior league position (Div1) by coming out on top.
The game started with Wednesbury pressure but Zac, Crusher and particularly Sedgy defended very well restricting the attackers few sights of goal. Stonnall were playing mainly on the break and the pressure finally told in the 12th min when the ball broke loose in the six yard area and the Wednesbury forward scored.
Stonnall gradually came into the game having better possession and were unlucky on a couple of occasions when following good work from Squiggy down the left wing, firstly Ben and then Mac, who had come on, had chances which the opposition defence dealt with well.
Following half time, the game restarted with both teams having good attacking possession but Wednesbury took control of the game with three goals in nine mins to make the score 4:0. The Stonnall lads hadn’t done a lot wrong and were enjoying a fair share of the play but Wednesbury were more penetrative and had taken their chances.
Despite this, Stonnall heads never went down and they were still playing good passing football. With nine mins remaining, a break on the right saw Charlie fouled and from Harry’s resulting free kick low into the area, Ethan got a touch on to Jack who finished well for the second game running to make the score 4:1.
Stonnall Phoenix finished the game well and nearly added to their consolation goal with further chances but were unlucky to come up against a resolute defence.
All the lads contributed to a good team performance and will take heart from the fact that they were not outclassed by a very good team two divisions higher.

Message from the Manager
MOTM: Sedgy. Well done on a great performance as right wing back who saw plenty of action and dealt with the difficulties very well, constantly talking.
This was a good measure of our progress. Wednesbury Sports Union were a well disciplined and organised team. They were eager to be first to the ball and quick when in possession. All of this we have talked about over the last several weeks so now you understand what I mean.
We did a great job to go in 1-0 at half time, we must remember when we pick a player up from a set piece we must stick with them. We had two very good chances in the second half – on another day we may have converted them.
Be pleased with your performance against a good team – there are lots of positives and learning curves to take from this game.
