Stonnall Phoenix 1:4 Wednesfield
The team made a positive start to the match by pressing forward when in possession but were being made to work hard to regain the ball when Wednesfield won it back. The opposition had an early shot off target before Benno got free on the left and released a looping shot which the keeper just managed to tip onto the bar and deal with the rebound.
Shortly afterwards, Wednesfield took the lead on 13 mins for 0:1. Five minutes later, on a counter-attack, DJ was slipped in through the centre by Benno but was marginally offside even though he finished well.
Stonnall Phoenix were now enjoying a better period. However, in the 20th minute Wednesfield made it 0:2 after good work by No7 who was proving difficult to contain with his runs down the right.
The second half saw the lads passing and holding the ball better but following chances at both ends, two goals in five minutes for 0:4 put the result beyond Phoenix. Wednesfield had been more incisive with their forward play and were sharper in front of goal as befits a team from Div 1.
Better possession and good link up play particularly by Charlie, Squiggy and Mac lead to half chances for Harry, Jacko and Charlie and then with two minutes to go following a quick throw-in by Charlie, Mac wriggled free in the six yard box and finished well past the goalkeeper making the final score 1:4.
The boys can be proud of themselves, following three tough matches against Div 1 teams, that they have performed to a higher level and can take many positives.

Message from the Manager
Regardless of playing a team sat comfortably 3rd in division 1, we always planned to use these cup games to use players in different roles, today we did this. Captain Charlie was taken out of his central midfield role and used 15 mins in each half, as discussed in training we wanted to see how others worked together.
Although the result shone in favour of Wednesfield we created five very good chances, Benno hit the bar, DJ finished but ruled off side, Charlie narrowly missed with a curling effort, Jacko dribbled brilliantly through a packed box – just couldn’t finish, with Mac finally scoring. Had the chances we created gone in our favour who knows…..?
So many positives again to take from today and lots of discussions to be had. I’m thoroughly enjoying these games as I know you will learn a great deal from playing top teams. I thought Wednesfield played a very good game and wish them all the best in their cup run.
After much thought I have decided to award Mackenzie with this today, again he worked hard holding the ball up and bringing others into play rewarding himself with another goal.
Well done Mac – keep working hard!
Playing these d1 teams has made me realise we have to play quicker, again today we were unfortunate not to finish what we created.
We also need to talk more and make more tackles. Well done to the players who played in different positions, we should learn a lot from these games.
