Match Report – Friendly

Stonnall Phoenix 1:0 Streetly Ravens

This friendly against the Lichfield League Div1 team was Stonnall Phoenix’s first game as 11-a-side on a bigger pitch with larger goals as was a good preparation for the weekend’s new season kick-off.

With Streetly Ravens kicking downhill for the first of three 20min periods, they seemed to have the upper hand and were comfortable in possession. Phoenix’s defence including new signing Dylan were dealing well with the attacks and restricted Streetly to only two significant shots. One from a free kick which came off the post and the other wide of goal which Alfie, our new goalkeeper, had covered.

The second period meant that Phoenix were now facing downhill and following the Manager’s pep talk were attacking more and enjoying greater quality possession. Chances on goal came and Charlie had several shots which were repelled by the excellent goalkeeper and the game remained entertaining but goalless.

The final period would decide the game and the lads continued to pass and move well with good interplay and after chances at both ends, Streetly broke downfield and the resulting shot hit the bar. The ball was finally cleared by the Stonnall defence and almost immediately a midfield ball was threaded through to Mac who finished expertly over the keeper into the goal.

The remaining four minutes saw chances for Streetly to equalise but against a strong defence and good handling by Alfie, the game ended 1:0 to Stonnall Phoenix.

Message from the Manager

As this was a friendly the result had no meaning, it was more for a view of personal player progression along with new positions of 11 a side.

Many positives to be taken from the game against Streetly Ravens who play some very attractive football and gave us a good test for our first league game, we wish them good luck in their season ahead.

Our new signings Alfie (GK) and Dylan (CD) had excellent first games for their new team, without two ever present players – Squiggy (ill) Crusher (holiday) and other new signing Alex (holiday) we had no subs.

As expected a little rusty to start but once we got going we settled down, with players being employed in different positions to their norm, it gave a good indication of the balance and depth of squad we have to work with.

Well done lads – a good run out.

Neil
