Match Report 4th Sept 2016

Wyrley Juniors Wolves   1:2   Stonnall Phoenix

The first competitive match of the season saw Stonnall Phoenix come from behind and secure three points after a dominant second half performance.

Wyrley started the game the more settled and after enjoying better possession scored the opening goal in the eighth minute following a mazy run by their No9. The home side were on top at this stage and forced a couple of corners which were well defended at the near post.

Stonnall started to come into the game more and then in the 18th minute Zack, playing left wing, made a penetrative run and cut inside to finish well to equalise for 1:1. Harry was injured in the build up and was substituted by Bezza with Zack dropping into left back. Phoenix were now breaking well and threading searching through-balls to run onto. Then after 27 mins, one of these balls found Mac on the right who ran on, rounded the goalkeeper and finished calmly to make the score 2:1. Mac was then replaced by Harry after a knock and the team held the lead at halftime.

Two minutes into the second half Stonnall were awarded a penalty for a foul on Squiggy but it was unluckily missed. However, Stonnall were now dominating the game and were unlucky not to add to the score with little defending to do. Good runs by Harry, Ben and Squiggy lead to a succession of corners and near misses but the game finished 2:1 to Stonnall Phoenix.

Message from the Manager

From a slow first quarter of an hour we settled down to play some decent football.

Promising football from the first competitive 11 v 11 game, organised from defending corners with great breaks from our own box due to the outlet play we have talked about and practiced.
New signing Dylan was instrumental in CD with Jacko settling well into the role in front of CD.
Both Zak and Harry who shared LB position and Sedgy at RB made little work for Alfie to do in the second half.
I have decided to award Mackenzie MOTM today –
Playing three different roles: Striker, RW and CM he showed great energy and determination and also got on the score sheet with Zak.
Well done lads with only one sub due to holiday and illness you showed good energy and fitness which paid off in the last 15-20 mins.
Neil⚽️

Captains comments:

We started a little slow but then got into the game.
We dug in hard at times against a pressing team, we created a lot of chances that need to be finished. Remember what we have done in training about the early shot.
Well done Mac on your MOTM today. 👍🏻
