Match Report – Oct 2nd

Stonnall Phoenix   2:0   Newby Lions

Squiggy, Ben

Phoenix returned to winning ways with a morale boosting display.

Despite two recent league defeats, the lads didn’t show any signs of anxiety in their play and started the game with confidence and they were looking to reap early rewards with attacking play leading to shots by Ben and Mac.

Then in the 24th minute, Charlie launched a long throw perfectly into the path of Squiggy who cut in from the left, shrugged off a challenge and placed the ball past the keeper into the far corner for 1:0.

Although Newby were making threatening runs into the home side’s area, the defence remained resolute, aided by Alfie’s ever more well timed, smothering interceptions. The team pressed well delaying the opposition attacks and denying anything but half chances.

Down the other end, Charlie threatened the goal with a free kick and the excellent Squiggy was sent through one on one again but his goal bound shot was well saved.

The second half should have been harder playing uphill but if anything, Phoenix were even more dominant. The defence were strong and commanding, winning every header; the midfield were delaying and breaking up opposition attacks; and the forward line were causing constant problems with Ben, Mac, Squiggy and DJ all enjoying forays on goal.

The second goal deservedly came in the 57th minute. Alex came on and immediately threaded a bisecting through ball for Mac to play in Ben who prodded home to make the score 2:0.

The remainder of the game saw Newby rarely threaten and the game ended with Stonnall still attacking, indicative of their commanding display.

Message from the Manager:

This was a fantastic team performance.
What a difference from last weeks game. The pitch management and player position session we did in training was well executed, and as a team it was performed very well.
With respect to Newby Lions who like to play good football, we should give respect to ourselves for stopping them playing. The delay to set and press worked well – with more work of this it will aid team performances and possibly give you the result you want.

A few ‘well dones’ –
Alfie, the extra training is paying off, good vocal support and instructions along with great kicks.
Tom, Dylan, Harry, Zack all four at the back were solid and bought the ball out well and made early recovery runs and timely tackles.
Squiggy and Benno for their goals.

MOTM was difficult to award today. I could have given it to Squiggy for his endless running and neat footwork, or to the entire back four for their performance.
I decided to give it to Harry – he played out of position at CD and gave a display to be proud of, battled hard in 50/50 headers, won the ball and carried forward to midfield – take confidence H!
Well done lads this was a great performance from start to finish.
Neil

Captains comments:

We played well today and kept our shape: 60% – 20% from goal kicks which made a difference to winning the ball and having regular possession.
A clean sheet for Alfie, well done Sqiuggy and Ben for scoring your goals and to Harry for MOTM – well deserved.
Let’s keep it up lads.
