Stonnall Phoenix 1:1 Cresswell Wanderers Colts
A game of few chances ended all square and extended Stonnall’s unbeaten run in the league to five matches.
A minute’s silence was marked respectfully before the game in memory of a fellow Walsall Youth League player who lost his life recently.
The game started in a cold wind and damp conditions following an overnight storm but both teams coped well with this to contribute to a hard fought first half with neither team having the upper hand. With Squiggy and Dylan missing for the home side, Benno and DJ filled in well up front and Harry and Crusher were solid at the back.
The away side brushed the top of the bar with a looping shot and Stonnall forced a couple of saves but the game looked like being goalless at half-time until Cresswell scored with a skidding free-kick in the last minute to make it 0:1.
Last week’s MOTM recipients Alex and Jacko were both involved in many good moves again today and with half chances at both ends it was Jacko who forced the equaliser from a tight angle in the 49th minute after good pressure by Benno led to a ball across the box from Mac.
Cresswell hit the top of the bar again and Stonnall threatened on a number of attacks and with set pieces but the game ended in a competitive and deserved 1:1 draw.

Message from the Manager
Great respect to the team for working hard without 4 of their players. A sickness bug struck leaving us with limited resources.
Squiggy, Dylan out and Mac and DJ playing half each due to feeling ill left our training session to pitch in tatters.
Thank you to DJ who in the first half played in two different positions and to Jacko who started on the right then moved to CM – changing positions is sometimes forced upon us but as a learning curve it gives us the chance to explore strength in depth of the squad and look at players in different positions, this will also give great benefit to see what challenges other positions can play.
Tom and Harry were superb at CD, Tom made endless high ball headers and covered well for his RWB, Harry made great challenges further up the field and even made a Cruyff turn out of defence – well done Harry, confidence is growing, keep building on these performances.
Jacko was in the right place to cut home from a very tight angle after Mac had worked hard to keep hold of the ball and distribute well to keep position.
This was a decent game of football, what shouldn’t be heard is a coach beckoning a young player to miss a free kick at goal and then to gloat afterwards, on the opposite side of the pitch in view of all is a banner that advertises ‘RESPECT’.
Well done to Stonnall Juniors Phoenix for battling hard you all deserve a very well earned Thank you!
MOTM – After talking with Wayne and listening to his views, I have decided to share this week’s MOTM award with Harry and Tom, both played brilliantly at the centre of defence, thwarting good build up play from Cresswell and bringing the ball forward with opportunity.
Well done Harry and Tom!
It was a shame we had Squiggy out who has scored 9 in 3 games for us and Dylan who is a brilliant defender.
This wasn’t our best performance but it was a point we deserved.
Well done Jack for getting our goal and to Mac for not giving up.
Come on Stonnall!
