Match Report – Feb 19th

Stonnall Phoenix   2:2   Wyrley Juniors Wolves

Squiggy, Charlie

Stonnall’s first league game for six weeks was competitively fought and the points were shared after Phoenix came from behind twice.

The first half was characterised by Wyrley attacks being soaked up by the home defence, then with balls out of defence for the forwards to run onto. It was, however, Wyrley who took the lead in the 14th minute with a left wing shot which went in off the far post for 0:1.

Charlie was commanding in midfield and just two minutes later Stonnall equalised with his ball to Squiggy who found the net with a shot across the goal for 1:1. The home side then had the better of the rest of the half with shots from Squiggy and DJ and a couple of testing free kicks by Charlie.

Then followed a good move involving Sedgy who won the ball in the right back area and played it up to DJ who ran onto the ball, drew the keeper but just missed the far post with his shot. Squiggy was also unlucky to be given offside following composed defending and a pass by Harry.

Following the half time break, Stonnall kept the upper hand forcing the Wyrley keeper into action with chances for the forwards. With Bezza, Crusher, Alex and Jacko combative in midfield and Charlie and Squiggy linking well, it looked like it would be a home win but the away side were fast on the break and from a throw in, the ball dropped nicely for a Wyrley attacker in front of goal and his header made it 1:2 after 42 mins.

This seemed to buoy the visitors and give them renewed impetus. Phoenix defenders came under pressure again from the marauding forwards but Dylan, Sedgy and Harry stayed strong. Alfie handled well and commanded his area and a routine goalkeeper collection led to a big kick into the opposing half which Charlie controlled, weaved into the area and scored from a tight angle to make the score 2:2 in the 54th minute.

The rest of the game was similarly end to end but the two teams couldn’t find a winner and the entertaining game ended in a draw.

Message from the Manager

With respect to Wyrley Wolves I’m still puzzled as to how we didn’t get more than a point from this game!
With no subs to call upon I think the team showed great character and it showed some that they have a full game of fitness in them.
As I’ve said previously from a little bad can come great good – this was so on Sunday when some players played a different position than used to, and didn’t they do themselves proud?
Parents/supporters wouldn’t know what we’ve been working on and discussing in training but the lads clearly took it on board and tried to deliver it.
Ash was without his usual partner up front – Mac, and we were forced to drop Charlie to CM allowing DJ to partner Ash who both, with fantastic pace, gave us positivity.
Tom, Jacko and Charlie made a midfield trio of great resilience and advancing pressure, Tom made some decisive robust tackles whilst Charlie and Jacko played some lovely 1-2’s – very attractive!
Dylan as usual was solid at the back along with his partners Harry and Sedgy who took a rather ‘dishy’ tackle but showed great determination and played the game out – this showed what team spirit is all about.
Two well taken goals from Ash and Charlie gave us the share of a very good game.

With much thought it was difficult to split the most midfield trio into individuals so I thought it apt to award this weeks MOTM to Tom, Jacko and Charlie.
Well done you three – let’s build on this!

I really enjoyed this game even though we didn’t win we played good football.
Alfie‘s kicks are huge now!
Well done Jack and Tom for MOTM and playing along side me, well done Squiggy for scoring again.
