Stonnall Phoenix 2:6 Sandwell Stars

Sam, Jordan

A competitive game, with both sides enjoying periods of possession, eventually went the way of the visitors after a spirited display by Stonnall Phoenix.

A good start by the home side was capitalised on when Sam scored his first goal for Stonnall in the sixth minute. The ball was cleared to the left midfielder and finding space, he shot from 25 yards and over the goalkeeper into the top corner of the net for a spectacular early goal.

The first quarter of the match had seen few other chances, Ross and Ennis dealing effectively with any Sandwell attacks. The visitors eventually equalised in the 17th minute but Stonnall continued to break through midfield and force a number of corners. Nathan had a shot following a corner before Sandwell took the lead at 1:2, four minutes after the equaliser.

Then, Joe received the ball from Milo and his run on goal resulted in a shot after good work by Liam, Harry and Oscar on the right and after Jordan came on, he managed a shot at goal after causing panic in the opposition area. The away side made it 1:3 eleven mins before half time but Phoenix still pressed and following an Ennis free kick which was saved, the last kick of the half was a goal for the hosts after Jordan poked home.

The game was back in the balance and Stonnall had the momentum at 2:3. Oscar, who had been industrious throughout, went on a jinking run down the left and later on Sam and Harry put in dangerous crosses which, on another day, could have resulted in a goal. Unfortunately for Stonnall, the chances could not be converted and Sandwell scored three more times, including a late penalty, to put the result beyond doubt, but Phoenix still created openings resulting in a Dillan shot over the bar and a Liam near miss from half way after seeing the keeper off his line. The game finished soon after with a 2:6 result in favour of Sandwell Stars.

Stonnall were well in this game for an hour and showed spirit and determination, scoring two well taken goals.

Man of the Match

Bruce has this week given the MOTM award to Sam. Improved performances week on week have enabled Sam to get more game time and as well as being involved in many good passages of play, he took his chance and scored a great first goal for the team. Well done Sam.
