Stonnall Phoenix 6:0 Jubilee Jaguars

Dillan, Nathan2, Jenko, Jordan, Sam

Stonnall eased to their first win of the season in a dominant display of attacking football.

The first quarter of an hour was almost exclusively Stonnall attacking and Dillan had a shot on goal following a Liam throw and Harry flashed a shot just wide from the edge of the area. It was good pressure from Phoenix and Jaguars were finding it difficult to get out of their defensive half. Finally the pressure told and after good work by Jordan, Harry crossed for Dillan to score from close range for a deserved lead after 17 minutes.

The chances continued and Harry headed at the goalkeeper and JJ saw a shot hit the woodwork after closing down and winning the ball. Then in the 26th minute, a few minutes after coming on, Nathan made a run to get on the end of a long Liam throw, getting the perfect touch to divert the ball into the net for a 2:0 lead.

Further opportunities saw a header over from Harry, Liam shooting from distance and Oscar shooting just wide after getting round the back but despite two offside goals, the score remained 2:0 at halftime. It was a dominant first half in which Stonnall Phoenix played with verve and confidence. The back four of Sedgy, Ross, Ennis and Devone were largely untroubled, Liam and JJ protected them and always played forwards and the wingers, Harry and Oscar made swashbuckling runs.

The next goal was important and it came ten minutes into the second half when Harry crossed from the left and Jenko burst into the six yard box to bundle the ball in. The fourth goal was just two minutes later as Jordan stretched to score following Nathan’s assist for 4:0. The goals kept coming as Sam side stepped the keeper to slot home following good work by Dillan and Jenko. Nathan completed the scoring on 70 minutes with another classy first time touch on from Liam’s cross after Ennis worked a clever free kick.

The lads were enjoying themselves and Nathan, Jordan, Jenko and Dillan could all have added to the score. Liam having taken most of the throw ins and dead balls and controlled the game from midfield, could have got his deserved goal but scooped over after Dillan hit the bar and then struck the post from a tight angle.

6:0 represents Stonnall’s best win for a few years and was a dominant performance from the first minute to the last. The goals typified the scorers’ skills, Dillan’s finishing, Nathan’s instinctive touch, Sam’s silky skills, Jordan’s reach and Jenko’s doggedness. It was an all round display of controlling, possession football and will give the lads confidence for the games to come.

Man of the Match

The whole squad deserve recognition today for a great team performance and it is difficult to single out one player for this accolade but it was the perfect game for Liam to shine in. He was all over the park, taking throw ins, corners and free kicks, breaking up play and commanding midfield. Almost capping off his all round performance with a goal, he deserves this week’s MOTM award. Well done Liam.
